“Devant nous le vertige” (Face-to-Face with Vertigo) was the key phrase for the season, bringing together and providing direction for the plays during the year. From the perspective of seeking answers, La Bordée invited the audience to delve into the past to understand present-day Quebec. Today, as a society, what are our reactions when we are confronted with sensitive topics, burning with truth?
The visuals developed raised the question right away, even before the audience took their seats. Tasked with visually translating vertigo, the artistic direction broke the conventional codes of theatre. The balance was corrupted. Typography was used to create discord, and the images were tense. The eye was unexpectedly drawn to the irregularity of the letters, and the effect of confusion was heightened by the point of tension or rupture felt by the bodies and objects presented, which gave clues about the topics addressed by the plays. With the text in the background, the image became the statement. The result? Face-to-face with vertigo.
